The Dark Aether is a mist-shrouded plane of eternal twilight that acts as a metaphysical barrier between the Material Plane, the Plane of Aether, and the Planes of the Dead. Serving as a liminal prison, it houses exiled entities, damned spirits, and ancient horrors sealed away from the rest of the cosmos.
Unlike the structured geometry of the living worlds, the Dark Aether actively resists navigation and wears down the minds of its inhabitants through three distinct rules of reality:
- Shifting Geography: The terrain is mutable, veiled in dense fog where physical pathways bend and shift. Thoughts and emotional states can inadvertently move a traveler backward or forward through localized pockets of time, making maps useless.
- The Erosion of Self: The atmosphere actively drains memory and identity. New arrivals experience gradual amnesia; over time, even restored memories return warped into hallucinations of despair. Those who lose their identities entirely dissolve into the plane's ambient shadow.
- Predatory Sustenance: Because physical death does not exist here—slain bodies simply reform over time at the cost of the victim's remaining memories—traditional food is unnecessary. However, to stave off mental erosion, inhabitants must hunt and consume the life essence or memories of other living beings.
The hierarchy of the Dark Aether is defined by those powerful enough to resist the plane's mental erosion or those who have bound themselves to its deepest corruptions.
- The Unutterable: A primordial entity of cosmic hunger sealed within the Dark Aether by ancient gods to prevent it from consuming reality. Though imprisoned, its consciousness permeates the fog, offering power and memory preservation to those who submit to its will.
- Mara Hyrrokkin, The Veilmother: The Unutterable’s high priestess and self-proclaimed queen of the plane. She wields the fog and shadows with physical authority, subjecting intruders to brutal trials to determine if they are fit for servitude or destruction.
- Lyria Knossos, Keeper of the Abyss: A vampiric executioner bound to the Unutterable. Operating from a palace of shifting geometry, she feeds not on blood, but on the lingering echoes of souls, ensuring no traveler leaves the realm unmarked.
- The Hollow King: A forgotten monarch of a fallen empire who traded his soul to the Unutterable for eternal rule. He sits upon a throne of bone within a hallucinatory palace, reliving his kingdom's destruction and luring wanderers in to share his endless grief.
- Elohrynna (The Pale Choir): A collective entity formed from hundreds of fused, tormented souls. They drift through the mists singing a hypnotic dirge that strips willpower from those who hear it, absorbing weak-willed travelers into their chorus.
The general population of the Dark Aether consists of broken souls and monstrosities born from the plane's oppressive ecology.
- Shades and Wraiths: The most common inhabitants—souls that have completely succumbed to memory loss. Stripped of identity, they repeat fragments of their former lives in endless, meaningless loops or violently attack travelers to absorb their warmth.
- The Threxil: Former fae exiled to the Dark Aether for crimes against the natural order. Twisted into gaunt, spectral shadows of their former beauty, they use illusions and deceptive traps to lure travelers into their territory to consume their essence.
- Manifestations of the Broken: Monstrosities spontaneously generated by the plane itself, coalescing from the discarded memories and grief of eroded souls. Gazing at one forces the observer to vividly experience the agonizing sorrows of strangers.
- The Ul-Gashuun: Ancient, amorphous embodiments of despair that predate recorded history. They manifest wherever hope or active resistance is strong, exuding a suffocating aura that drains resolve and dissolves their victims directly into the mist.
¶ Access and Containment
The Dark Aether is locked behind a network of ancient runic seals mirrored across the Material Plane and the Planes of the Dead, likely established during the banishment of the Dark Fae and The Unutterable.
Despite these barriers, brief passages into or out of the plane occur through:
- Druthonae: Temporal gateways that manifest naturally in places of extreme tragedy or magical fallout during specific celestial alignments.
- Verum Transitus: A complex, highly dangerous magical ritual that forcibly breaches the boundary, requiring heavy warding to prevent the caster's immediate memory loss upon entry.
