The Ocean of Dreams is a mutable plane separate from the material world where the living and the dead interact. The open ocean forms a shared consciousness among all living things, while individual spheres called Islands of Dreaming manifest specific dreams. These islands rarely intersect, though skilled dreamers with strong bonds can bridge the intervening Aether to dream together.
Often called the Land of Nightmares, this dimension converges dreams, thoughts, and temporal events. Legends caution against reckless magic use, detailing practitioners who accidentally entered the plane and succumbed to its psychological hazards.
Early exploration stems from a dark wizard who used the plane to divine the future. His experiments with astral projection and physical entry ended in his disappearance, but his surviving notes inspired apprentices to continue his research.
Dreamers visit accidentally during sleep or rarely while awake. Their personal islands shift continuously unless stabilized by external forces. The dead also inhabit the ocean, forming permanent islands that expand over time. When a soul manifests here, its island anchors near those of deceased companions, allowing them to link and share dreams. Because individuals sovereignly control their domains, no entity can be forced to merge islands or enter another's dream.
Visitors must shed fear, hate, and anger upon entry; those who harbor strong negative attachments descend into the Severed Realm. Malevolent beings exploit these discarded emotions, feeding on them to warp dreams into nightmares.
Because the ocean connects to multiple physical realms, practitioners sometimes use it as a perilous transit network. Intertwined thought and reality erode a mortal traveler's sanity, while native denizens actively hunt distressed trespassers. Powerful immortals, unfazed by these dangers, frequently use the plane for rapid travel and occasionally communicate with sleeping mortals or the dead along the way.
While modern culture regards a Sennik as a psychological dream dictionary, a true Sennik is a dual-plane artifact crafted to exist identically in both the waking and dreaming worlds. Imbued with its creator's psionic or magical energy, the tome acts as an extension of their will, allowing the owner to manipulate dreamscapes while actively resisting external intrusion.
Masters of these techniques are known in some traditions as Mistrzowie Koszmarów. In Western European magical traditions, a properly constructed Grimoire functions identically to a Sennik, channeling effects across the dream boundary.
The Ocean of Dreams partially reflects the material plane through focused thought. Projecting astrally into the ocean drops travelers into an unstable echo of the waking world. Within this space, Aether acts as a creative force. Skilled practitioners can harvest this concentrated magical energy, known as dreamessence, to reshape their surroundings.
Because collective thought shapes these material echoes, massive landmarks like mountains manifest solidly, while smaller objects remain ephemeral. By manipulating these echoes with focused intent, practitioners can induce alterations in the physical world. With sufficient mastery, constructs like homunculi or golems forged in the dreamscape can transition into physical reality.
Native entities known as Kithian exist simultaneously in the ocean and the physical world, drawing their vitality directly from dreamessence. A Kithian can interbreed with a mortal dreamer to produce hybrid offspring that bridge both planes. These hybrids manipulate dreamessence in the waking world, executing wayfarer magic and constructing devices impossible under standard physics.
